NETWORKS
Computer networks exist almost everywhere. You can find these in large/small business environment, charitable institutions, schools and even homes. A network is the connection between two or more computers to allow the sharing of resources.
Computer networks can be classified as either Local Area Networks (LANs), Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) or Wide Area Networks (WANs). The selection of a network will be largely dependent on geography. A LAN is usually made of a collection of computers in a single building or building complex. For example, the computers at a university, school or a small office. MANs tend to cover a large geographical area than LANs but are not as large as WANs. On the other hand, WANs links machines that could be in neighbouring cities or even around the world. For example multi-national companies having offices in New York, London and Tokyo will connect using a WAN.
The other pages of this informal website will focus on LANs. Its various topologies and technologies.
