The OSI Model

The OSI Model was developed in 1974 Jointly by the International Standards Organisation (ISO) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The reason for the development of the OSI model was so that manufacturers of network equipment could create devices which would propierty design by following a standard way of communicating.

The OSI model simply explained is as follows (7):

  • Application - Provides network services to application programs.
  • Presentation - uses a set of translation that allows data to be interpreted properly.
  • Session - Provides an open communication path with other systems
  • Transport - Provides end-to-end connection reliability
  • Network - Routes data and sends data through the best network path
  • Data Link - Enusres that transmitted bits are received in a reliable way
  • Physical - The transmission of binary data
