DEFINITION OF COMPUTER/INTERNET SECURITY

Security means different things to different people. For some it is the ability to browse the web peacefully, knowing that no one is looking over their shoulders whereas others see it to be the ability to conduct financial and commercial transactions safely. For the website operators, it means the confidence that their sites will not be misused by an unauthorised person or used as a gateway into their local area network (LAN).

As a result of those different perceptions there have been several definitions among them, these  are as follows:

Security is …“the  ideal state where all information can be communicated across the internet secure from unauthorised persons being able to read it and/or manipulate it” [Essinger, 2001. p. 43].

Security …“deals with the techniques employed to maintain security within a computer system” [Gollmann, 1999. p. 3]

Security … “is also the process of preventing and detecting unauthorised use of one’s computer” [Home Network Security, 2003]
