PROTECTION
While
these are by no means exhaustive, below is a list of possible actions which can
be taken to protect against threats [http://www.bankingmm.com/security_under_scrutiny.htm]:
-
Install
firewalls and virus detection software to be used as a protective shield
between your computer and the internet. These software are able to protect
against hackers, virus attacks or malicious "Trojan Horse" programmes . These
security programmes are capable of preventing and detecting unauthorised access
to your system.
-
Update
your virus protection software constantly to be current with new malicious
programmes.
-
It would
help to disable the 'File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" feature
on your Operating System as this would prevent an external party from gaining
illegal control or access to the system.
-
Avoid
using shared/public PCs for extremely personal tasks such as Internet banking.
-
Constantly back up your files to a removable disk or another computer, this
minimises some of the physical risk such as accidental deletion, system problem
or theft of your computer.
-
Store
backup in a different and secure location for added protection.
-
Never
download programmes unless you know the website is reputable and do not open
e-mail messages with suspicious attachments which could have malicious
programs.
-
Up-to-date browsers always, this means that the security weaknesses or bugs
which are found in browsers could be easily fixed with the 'patches' that are
issued by the software company. To do this regularly check your software
vendor's website and apply any new security features available.
-
The two
most popular browsers are Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape, below are
their sites for the above purpose:
For Internet Explorer go to:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/default.asp
For Netscape Navigator go to:
http://wp.netscape.com/security/
-
NEVER
download or install files which you are unsure of.
-
Complete
regular audits to prevent or deuce physical threats such as vandalism and theft
-
Use
devices that allows the organisation to secure their equipment to the building
-
Use
Encryption, Cryptographic checksums and techniques when sending highly private
messages.
-
Utilise
web proxies
