VIRUS

During its lifetime a virus will go through the following stages:

  • Dormant phase: In this state the virus is idle. The virus does not even replicate in this phase but it may be activated by time or system conditions. It is very careful to note though that not all viruses have this phase
  • Propagation phase: the virus infects other executable programs or documents with an identical copy of itself , each infected program now has this copy which will then enter the propagation phase
  • Triggering phase: the virus is activated to perform the necessary function for which it is intended on the victim’s system. Here too as with the dormant state, any condition may be used to activate the virus
  • Execution phase: the virus executes on the victim’s system and performs its function, which can be harmless or damaging

WORMS

The Worm similarly goes through its phases [http://www-courses.cs.uiuc.edu/~cs397 pgn/lectures/lecture3.pdf]

  • Dormant
  • Propagation

      1. Search for other systems to infect
2. Establish connection to target remote system
3. Replicate self onto remote system

  • Triggering
  • Execution
