With the introduction of the computer, the need for automated tools for protecting files and other information stored on the system became evident [Stallings 2000, p. 2]. This has become more vital with the introduction of internetworking devices and the development of the internet in general. Individuals may seek to harm the system by any means to fulfil their own selfish reasons. These can be in the form of vandalism, hackers, crackers or simply acts of nature. One of the most publicised attacks on computer systems is the computer virus [Stallings 2000, p. 2]. However it is becoming an increasing factor that employees, both present and former, are also posing great threats [CBI, 2001, p. 8].
With these factors being faced security is crucial and we shall therefore seek to introduce as effectively as possible the threats that organisations and individual computer users, are being confronted on a daily – sometimes minutely - basis.
