Internet User Group

Purpose:

The Internet User Group provides a forum for identifying practices and initiatives that will enable UEL to exploit the potential of the Internet.

Reporting and implementation:

The Chair of the group is responsible for following up actions decided by the Group. Normally, operational issues will be resolved via direct contact with the Information Technology Dept. The Group, along with other Consultation Groups, has a role in developing the IT Strategic Plan.

Remit:

  1. To identify the uses to which the Internet may be put, and promote these ideas for inclusion into the IT strategy.

  2. To work with Information Technology to ensure that University staff and students are informed as to the potential of the Internet.

  3. To provide feedback in the areas of access routes to the Internet, user interfaces and user support services such as training and documentation.

  4. To be the primary forum for resolving operational matters and to provide input into the development of IT strategy in relation to the University's Internet publishing activities.

  5. To inform decision making in the areas of the University's network security policy, data protection and other similar legal and ethical concerns for which the Internet has implications for the University.

  6. To identify ways in which the Internet can be used to create a positive image for the University and, potentially, provide a service for the local community.

  7. To receive reports from the University's two representatives on the London JANET User Group.

Revised Feb. 98.

UEL's two representatives on the London JANET User Group (LJUG) are (vacancy) (Information Technology rep), and Graham Thomas (user rep).

LJUG in turn sends a representative to the JANET National User Group (JNUG).

JNUG has an input into the Joint Information Systems Committee, which funds the UK academic networks. Both LJUG and JNUG have regular contact with UKERNA, the company which manages the operation and development of the JANET networks.
