People's Houses: Afro-Caribbean House: Sankofa (TH2000/Ale Douvan) | Photo: C&TR Photography: LBTH TH2000 will develop six living "house museums" as showcases of ethnic and cultural crafts and traditions preserving and celebrating the transmission of the older culture and as a stimulus to the new. Representing Tower Hamlets' principal cultural traditions - Bengali, Chinese, Cockney, Jewish, Somali and Afro-Caribbean. Ale Douvan is a Tower Hamlets based cultural dance and training group devoted to the preservation, promotion and development of Afro-Caribbean cultural dance and music. 'Sankofa' is Ghanaian for 'go back and fetch' and this event embraces the cultural values, traditions and issues that form part of the African Caribbean heritage. Through a mixture of traditional dance, music, songs, chanting, drumming and storytelling, Ale' Douvan will take you on a magical journey to rediscover some of the forgotten jewels of Africa and the Caribbean. Feel the pulse of the earth and experience the spirit that has remained alive through the generations. Friday 13 and Saturday 14 October at 7;30pm. Pre-performance workshops at 4:30pm. Kingsley Hall, Powis Road, Bow E3. Entry: £5 (full), £3 (conc). |
