Alé Douvan is a Kwéyol (Eastern Caribbean Patwa) term meaning 'Go forward!'. Alé Douvan is based in Tower Hamlets and was formed in the late 1980s as a cultural dance, education and training project specialising in the dance, music, culture and language of Africa and the Caribbean. The project was initiated by local people to promote better understanding and expertise in African and Caribbean cultural art forms through music, dance, art, costume, history, song, language and customs. The name represents the intention of the project to celebrate the cultural past of African and Caribbean dance and music, the fact that it is dynamically alive, going forward and developing all the time! One of the main aims of the project is to develop appreciation, respect and understanding for these art forms within all sections of the community, thereby encouraging racial and cultural integration. |
