There are now 15 countries in the European Union

Thirteen more countries have submitted their applications to join the European Union.

  • Cyprus applied in 1990
  • Switzerland applied in 1992

  • Bulgaria applied in 1995
  • Estonia applied in 1995
  • Latvia applied in 1995
  • Lithuania applied in 1995
  • Romania applied in 1995
  • Slovak Republic applied in 1995
  • Czech Republic applied in 1996
  • Slovenia applied in 1996

Malta, who applied to join the European Union in 1992, no longer wishes to be a member.

In 1992 the people of Switzerland voted against joining the European Economic Area (EEA), but has not withdrawn its application to join the EU.

In 1994, the Norwegians held a second referendum, in which they asked if the people wanted to join the European Union or not. The Norwegians voted against joining and therefore is not a member.
