There are now 15 countries in the European Union

Thirteen more countries have submitted their applications to join the European Union.

Turkey applied in 1987	Cyprus applied in 1990	Switzerland applied in 1992
Poland applied in 1994	Hungary applied in 1994	Bulgaria applied in 1995
Estonia applied in 1995	Latvia applied in 1995	Lithuania applied in 1995
Romania applied in 1995	Slovak Republic applied in 1995	Czech Republic applied in 1996
Slovenia applied in 1996

Malta, who applied to join the European Union in 1992, no longer wishes to be a member.

In 1992 the people of Switzerland voted against joining the European Economic Area (EEA), but has not withdrawn its application to join the EU.

In 1994, the Norwegians held a second referendum, in which they asked if the people wanted to join the European Union or not. The Norwegians voted against joining and therefore is not a member.
