Present position
I was appointed as Dean of the Faculty of Science and Health at the University of East London in April 1997. In addition I am Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Research) and, in that capacity, am Chair of the Academic Board Research Committee. Before that I was head of the Department of Life Sciences in this University (1993-1997).
My previous posts were as Head of the Department of Biochemistry in University College, Cork, Ireland (1978-1993) and as Lecturer in Chemistry at University College, London (1965-1978).

Research interests
In the past these have included determination of protein amino acid sequences, evolution of cytosolic and mitochondrial isoenzyme pairs particularly of aspartate aminotransferases, and biogenesis of mitochondrial proteins (see list of refereed publications ). All of my interests have involved purification of proteins and I recently edited a book on the subject (Protein Purification Protocols, Humana Press, 1996, ISBN 0-89603336-8); this is one of the Methods in Molecular Biology series. The contents of the book are also included in Humana's Protein Protocols on CD-ROM.
A major current interest is thermostability of proteins and I should welcome views on the thoughts attached!
