What is Social Enterprise?


There are many competing definitions of social enterprise and our courses at UEL give an opportunity to examine them critically. The main types of definitions are:

  • those which assume Social Enterprise is mainly about commercial businesses who have a social purpose and mission

  • those which concentrate on voluntary sector (not for profit) organisations becoming enterprising and financially sustainable rather than dependent on grants

  • those which stress the role of social entrepreneurs maximising the investement in and gains from social capital in the community
