The structure of the programme
You will study 18 units
in total; on a full time programme this is usually three units each semester.
The programme.is constructed in three 'strands'.
The 'core capabilities'
strand offers skills and knowledge in: analysing social problems and proposing
solutions, researching issues and evaluating programmes, developing proposals
for action, and fundraising, working as an individual, in groups and within
organisations, managing projects, together with working knowledge of IT,
financial management, legal frameworks etc.
The 'cognitive' strand
develops theoretical knowledge in political and social theories on: local
political and community action, roles of national and local government, nature
of modern and post-modern society, social movements, informal and organised
groups, concepts of 'development' locally, nationally and globally, historical
and international perspectives
The 'contextual' strand
enables you to choose either from a menu of relevant units or a 'minor pathway'
in another subject area.
The course involves
project work which you may undertake in an organisation (your own if you are
already involved with one, or a placement).
