Welcome to Mark Dewell's Home Page

Workwise, I am a Network Specialist at the University of East London, which means that I do a bit of administration on Windows servers and look after their Exchange email system. I also get involved in various network wiring projects.

My main interest outside of UEL is railway preservation and I now maintain the UK Heritage Railways web pages on behalf of the Heritage Railway Association, which nicely combines my interest in railways with a general interest in the Internet. I first got involved in railway preservation as an active member of the Great Western Society at Didcot Railway Centre, being trained as a shunter, guard and fireman. Lack of time forced me to give up such active involvement.

I am also very interested in conservation, especially my local environment and often spent Sundays working with the Epping Forest Conservation Volunteers on various forest management tasks (such as getting covered in mud and falling in ponds).
Other websites relating to enviromental subjects in the local area include the RSPB: Rainham Marshes, Cranham Marsh Nature Reserve and Thames Chase Community Forest. More environmental information can also be found on the official pages of the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers and on the EnviroLink website.

I am a fan of motor racing and once spent a season as service crew for a friend who raced saloon cars (he never came close to winning anything but we had some fun and he managed a season without hitting anything, so that was ok)
I have also been to several F1 races, including the Belgium GP at Spa twice, and also the Le Mans 24 hours several times.

I spent several years involved with Scuba Diving and was a member of the UEL Sub-Aqua Club before giving it up due to lack of time.
The British Sub-Aqua Club are also on the web.

I also read a lot of Science Fiction & Fantasy books and badly need more shelf space at home!

I also spend an occasional evening playing Dungeons & Dragons Online and am a member of the DDO The Order of the Sword guild.

The UEL IT Helpdesk webpages are useful, but you may find my This Is Not The Help Desk! webpages more entertaining.
Temporary home for new helpdesk pages.
